What daily life looks like in Monticello: Mississippi River parks, trumpeter swans, Bertram lakes, local schools and easy I-94 access.
Monticello is the town David Olson grew up in, and it still has the feel of a river community where people know their neighbors. The 2020 Census counted 14,455 residents, yet the town keeps a small-town pace. The city sits right along the Mississippi River, and much of local life, from evening walks to summer picnics, happens within sight of the water.
Getting around
Location is one of Monticello's biggest draws. The city sits at the connection between Interstate 94 and Highway 25 and is about 2 miles from Highway 10. The City of Monticello puts the drive at roughly 45 minutes to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and about 20 minutes to St. Cloud Regional Airport. That puts both the Twin Cities and St. Cloud within reach for work, shopping and family visits.
Parks along the river
The city lists more than 30 public parks and over 17 miles of biking, hiking and walking trails. Several parks look straight out over the Mississippi:
- Ellison Park (4.2 acres) has a wedding gazebo, a log shelter and river views.
- East and West Bridge Parks (2.5 acres each) offer gazebos, gathering space and views of the river.
- Swan Park is home to what the city calls Monticello's famous trumpeter swans, with a viewing and interpretive area.
- Montissippi County Park (154.3 acres) adds trails, camping and more river views on the west side of town.
Lakes, woods and open space
Just outside the core of town, Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park covers 1,200 acres with four lakes: Bertram, Long, Mud and First. The City of Monticello and Wright County own it jointly. Families use the swimming beach, picnic shelter and campground, and mountain bikers have 14 miles of single-track trail. Lake Maria State Park, with a Monticello address, protects one of the few remaining stands of the Big Woods, the maple, oak and basswood forest that once covered part of southern Minnesota.
Community amenities
The Monticello Community Center houses City Hall along with a rock climbing wall and an indoor water park, according to the city. CentraCare operates a hospital in Monticello, so you don't have to drive far for care. The city also notes that it is served by multiple fiber-optic internet providers, which matters to people who work from home.
Schools
Monticello Independent School District 882 serves the community. Its schools include Little Mountain Elementary, Pinewood Elementary, Monticello Middle School and Monticello High School, along with the 882 Online program, Eastview Education Center and Community Education. Families who are comparing homes near the edge of town should confirm the school boundary for any address they are considering.
A little history
Monticello has deep roots in Wright County. The county was established in 1855, and Wright County notes that Monticello was the original county seat before Buffalo took that role in 1868. Wright County itself is bordered on the north by the Mississippi River, the same river that shapes Monticello's parks and neighborhoods today.
