A quick tour of Big Lake, Becker, Elk River, Buffalo, Albertville, Clearwater, Sartell and Sauk Rapids, with verified local facts.
Monticello and St. Cloud get most of the attention, but the smaller towns around them are where many buyers find exactly what they want. Each has its own personality, from river towns to lake communities to growing suburbs on the interstate. Here is a quick tour with figures from the 2020 Census and the cities themselves.
Elk River
Elk River (25,835 residents) sits where the Elk and Mississippi rivers come together and serves as the Sherburne County seat. The city lists 1,444 acres of parks, more than 31 miles of paved walkways and a historic downtown. Highways 10, 169 and 101 run through town, with I-94 close by. Elk River was designated Minnesota's Energy City in 1997.
Big Lake
Big Lake (11,686 residents) is a growing Sherburne County community along the banks of Big Lake and Mitchell Lake. The city says it is about 45 miles from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and 24 miles from St. Cloud Regional Airport.
Becker
Becker (4,877 residents in 2020) is on Highway 10 in Sherburne County, a few minutes from I-94. The city reports 749 acres of public recreation space, access to the Elk and Mississippi rivers, and a school district that has served the community for over 100 years.
Buffalo
Buffalo (16,168 residents) has been the Wright County seat since 1868. Wright County lists 298 lakes, and Buffalo sits within that lake country.
Albertville
Albertville (7,896 residents in 2020) describes itself as halfway between the Twin Cities and St. Cloud on the I-94 corridor. The city highlights its many locally owned businesses and its small-town feel with big-city amenities nearby.
Clearwater
Clearwater, one of the 17 cities in Wright County, sits on the Mississippi where the Clearwater River joins it. The DNR lists a trailer access there, making it the take-out point for the 12.1-mile paddle from Beaver Island in St. Cloud.
Sartell and Sauk Rapids
Just north of St. Cloud, Sartell had 19,351 residents in 2020 and Sauk Rapids had 13,862. Sauk Rapids sits in Benton County along Highway 10, across the river from St. Cloud, with Highway 15 linking it to I-94. Visit Greater St. Cloud notes that Sauk Rapids City Park is a spot for smallmouth bass fishing on the Mississippi.
How to compare small towns
- Commute: Decide whether I-94 or Highway 10 fits your daily route better.
- Lifestyle: River town, lake town or interstate suburb? Each has a different feel.
- Schools: Confirm the district for each address.
- Services: Check city water and sewer versus well and septic.
